FTX claim sale after distributions: what you still hold

Money you have already received and rights to further distributions need to be looked at separately. In correspondence the remainder is sometimes called a stub claim, but that label alone does not describe everything being sold. What matters is reading which rights are included in the offer and the contract.

For more on how much FTX has already paid creditors in 2026, see our analysis “The FTX paradox”.

Put together a short history of the partial distributions: the allowed amount, distribution dates, amounts credited and payments actually received. If there is a gap between what was credited and what arrived, note it separately. And if a distribution never arrived or the word Forfeited appeared in your FTX Customer Portal, sort this out before selling: missed FTX distribution — a delay or a lost right. The buyer will need to understand the reason before discussing terms.

FTX claim sale after distributions: key questions to check

Price percentage: what amount is it based on?

“We pay 20%” — of what? Of the original amount or of the remainder? The difference can be several times over. The percentage may be discussed against the original face value or another explicitly stated amount. Ask for the final cash amount and a list of the rights it covers.

A hypothetical example for comparison

Say the original face value of the claim is $10,000, of which $7,000 has already been paid, leaving $3,000. The first buyer offers 20% of face value, that is $2,000. The second offers 50% of the remainder, that is $1,500. The first offer sounds smaller, yet pays more. The figures are hypothetical and are not an estimate of market price.

The remainder cannot always be found by simply subtracting the money received from face value: distributions may take interest and other elements into account. For comparison, use the documents for your class and the exact formula of the offer.

What information to prepare for a valuation

So that a buyer can value the remainder, prepare five pieces of information:

What to prepare for a valuation
  • The claim's proceeding: US or Bahamas.
  • The current allowed amount, and the disputed amount if there is a disagreement.
  • The history of distributions and of money actually received.
  • Pending reviews and notices on the claim.
  • Previous transfers, pledges or agreements affecting the rights.

For a first conversation, describing the situation is enough. Supporting materials and a secure way to share them are agreed separately. The full list is in our checklist of documents for selling an FTX claim. If a line in your FTX Customer Portal is unclear, it is better to show it in context, with unnecessary personal data hidden first, than to describe its meaning from memory.

Who gets a distribution paid during the transfer?

Some time may pass between agreeing the price and the transfer being recorded in the claims register. So discuss in advance what happens if the next distribution goes to the previous holder. The contract should make clear the rights of each party and the steps to take with such a payment.

The general transfer procedure is described in the FTX guidelines on sales of claims. For a specific deal, the applicable dates and the steps already completed are checked separately. A buyer's promise on its own does not change the data in the official register.

Sell your remaining rights or keep waiting?

Compare a fixed offer amount with uncertain future receipts. To decide, it helps to write down how much you need liquidity now, whether you are ready to keep managing the claim, and how you see the waiting time.

A high percentage in the headline is no substitute for the math. Before comparing offers, ask each buyer to answer four questions:

What to ask the buyer
  • What final amount in dollars you will receive.
  • What amount the percentage is based on: face value or the remainder.
  • When and how the amount will be paid, and what costs are deducted from it.
  • What is not yet confirmed, and in which case the terms may change.

Compare offers on these answers, not on the percentage in the first message.

Questions and answers

Can a sale be discussed after partial distributions from FTX?
Yes, the purchase of your remaining rights can be discussed. Whether a deal is possible, and on what terms, is decided after reviewing the claim, the distributions and the set of rights being transferred.
Is the price of the remainder equal to face value minus the money received?
That calculation is not always correct. You need to account for the structure of distributions, interest, the claim class and which rights are transferred.
Do I need to tell the buyer about past distributions?
Yes. The history of amounts credited and actually received is needed to understand what is being sold and to discuss the price.
